Spanish outlet Don Balon claim Mourinho thinks Varane is in the wrong hands as he continues to play for Zinedine Zidane.
The former Chelsea boss has also reportedly told the 24-year-old he will enjoy a better playing career in the Premier League.
Varane has made 11 appearances in all competitions for Real this season but has struggled to find his best form.
United have held a long-term interest in the centre-back ever since Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils currently have a number of central defenders at their disposal.
Mourinho has Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof to pick from with Daley Blind also able to play in the position.
Speaking back in March, Varane confirmed he had a ‘special relationship’ with Manchester United boss Mourinho.
"I mostly wondered if the club was in line with my project, namely to play," he said when quizzed on why he decided to stay at Real.
